Position: Reading Buddy - Reading Buddies
Location: Central Library, 85 Queen Street North; Country Hills Library, 1500 Block Line Road; Forest Heights Library, 251 Fischer-Hallman Road; Grand River Library, 175 Indian Road; Pioneer Park Library, 150 Pioneer Drive
Impact Statement: Buddy Up for Literacy!
We invite you to share the joy of reading with a young student who has learned the fundamentals but need practice. Volunteers are matched one-on-one with a Reading Buddy (grades 1- 4) to share stories, offer reading strategies and make reading fun on a weekly basis.
Description: Requirements
Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
Enjoy working with children of all ages; experience an asset
Positive attitude & able to work cooperatively with others
Work independently to complete tasks with minimal supervision
Excellent literacy skills & fluent in English
Work in a fast paced environment; flexible

Interact with the student in a friendly manner & establish a rapport
Select suitable reading material, based on student's interest/reading level
Read stories aloud with a clear speaking voice; encourage student to read aloud
Provide positive support/offer different reading strategies to the student
Explain reading concepts in a clear & concise way
Handle a variety of attention/learning challenges in a positive manner
Introduce the student to the resources available at the library
Keep customer/library information confidential
Obtain a Police Information Check once accepted into the program
Requirements: English Proficiency, Confidentiality, Work Without Supervision
Training Details: Kitchener Public Library provides an orientation on the first day of the program and a Reading Buddy Handbook is available.
Working Conditions: Reading Buddies is held in a meeting room or children's area of the library.
Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Evening
Time Detail: Country Hills Library | Tuesdays @ 6 pm; January 9 to February 27, 2018
Forest Heights Library | Wednesdays @ 6 or 7 pm; January 10 - November 28, 2018
Grand River Library | Tuesdays @ 6 pm; January 9 - February 27, 2018
Pioneer Park Library | Thursdays @ 6:15 pm; January 11 - March 1, 2018
