Impact Statement: John Howard Society of Waterloo-Wellington (JHSWW) is a community based professional non-profit charitable organization with the mandate to address the root causes of crime. JHSWW's primary role is to provide direct services in the form of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention services to children, youth and adults. Services include: bullying prevention/social competency programs, employment programs, domestic/family violence intervention programs, and justice programs. JHSWW takes a holistic and broad approach to crime prevention that assumes myriad factors contribute to crime including social and community factors. Services are premised on the belief that diverse prevention services help promote wellbeing and successful citizenship, and build healthy communities. JHSWW has an annual budget of over 3 million dollars; about 50 staff; and 30 plus volunteers. JHSWW is accredited by Imagine Canada. For more information
Description: JHSWW seeks an adult resident of Waterloo Region, the City of Guelph or Wellington County with a passion for maintaining healthy communities through crime prevention to serve as a Director. You will have demonstrated leadership skills and be committed to partnering with the rest of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director to provide excellence in oversight and strategic leadership. You have an understanding of policy governance models and financial controls. A background in human resource management/labour relations is preferred.
Training Details: Agency orientation is provided.
Working Conditions: Meetings are held in various locations in Cambridge, Guelph or Kitchener. Board members are unpaid volunteers serving one, two or three year terms.
Duration: More than 1 year
Timing: Weekday - Evening
Time Detail: Typically 5 hours per month. Monthly meetings are normally held on the fourth Monday of each Month during the months of January through May and September through November. Annual General Meeting in June and participation in Board Committee meetings/teleconference calls as needed.
