Impact Statement: The inclusion of tours in various languages meets the needs of the local community by providing opportunities which include and engage the diverse population in the Region of Waterloo. The Gallery hopes to open its doors and invite the public into the Gallery to experience the world of contemporary art. This program supports the goals as outlined in the Gallery’s Strategic Plan 2015-2020 by “creating welcoming opportunities to participate in program initiatives, continuing to grow audiences across our full community”. The multilingual tour program at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery is designed and “committed to enhancing accessibility and increased participation in all its programs”.
Description: The Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery is pleased to announce the introduction of the Multilingual Tour Program. The tour program will offer opportunities for the community to enjoy tours of the Gallery in a number of languages, making access to the Gallery much more inclusive. Currently, the Gallery is presenting tours in Spanish, Mandarin, Polish and Urdu. The volunteer interpreters lead engaging public tours of KWAG's current exhibition in their language of expertise.
Training Details: Six step training process:
1. Information delivered about the project for multilingual tour program and introduction to delivery of a gallery tour
2. An information package (in English) about the artwork and artists for the upcoming exhibition will be sent to the interpreters
3. Curator will give a tour for staff and volunteer interpreters of exhibit, with Question and answer period. Following tour, Educators meet for extended discussion.
4. Scheduled walkthrough with the Director of Public Programs offers opportunity for more information gathering about the exhibit
5. Interpreter will give a tour of the exhibit in their chosen language, KWAG staff member will oversee tour
6. Interpreter will give a tour of the exhibit in their chosen language to the public
Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Evening, Weekend - Daytime
