Position: Community Art Project

Impact Statement: Community Art Project volunteers understand that art is a tool for building social connections and fostering inclusion with community members from all walks of life.

Many in our community experience social and emotional isolation as a result of living in poverty and the experience of homelessness. Art can be a tool for increasing social connections and fostering community inclusion and integration. The Community Art Project aims to make connections between those who are often marginalized and members of the community at large in a comfortable, accessible venue where all are welcome to explore their creativity and experience connection through art. The Community Art Project is a partnership with Kitchener Public Library and Circle of Friends.

Good listening and communication skills
Able to work cooperatively with others
Open-minded regarding issues of poverty and homelessness
Experience working with marginalized folks is an asset
Able to commit to the program & attend all sessions

Set up (snack table, art supplies) and tidy room at the end of program
Help create an inclusive and welcoming space
Greet participants in a friendly manner and introduce them to the art project
Look for ways to engage others in enriching conversation
Contribute to the health of the group
Be a positive team member with staff and volunteers
Keep participant information confidential
Training Details: Attendance at our volunteer training session is mandatory (at Central Library) and must be completed prior to the placement. A tour of the library space and our volunteer handbook will also be provided.
Working Conditions: Community room at Central Library/Kitchener.
Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Daytime
Time Detail: 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 2-4 PM | March August 2018
March 6 & 20; April 3 & 17; May 1 & 15; June 5 & 19; July 3 & 17; August 7 & 21
